Summary:

Rebecca Purice is the narrator of this piece, and she gives basic information about Pathway Oregon.  You need to be a Oregon resident, filled out a FAFSA application, and be eligible for a Pell Grant.  Elizabeth Bickford, Director of Financial Aid, explains the reason for offering this opportunity to incoming students.  The main reason being to make the University of Oregon more accessible to Oregon residents.

Audience and agenda

Oregon News is a weekly news program that is produced by the students in the broadcast journalism sequence at UO.  This program first aired in 1991 by Professor Karl Nestvold.  In 2008 a 5 minute daily news update was created to supplement the weekly half hour show.

Usefulness:

In order to be eligible for this program you need to first be eligible for a pell grant.  On the University website it says that you can also gain free housing, but you must have a 3.8 high school GPA  to be eligible for that award.  It is great that the University of Oregon is offering this new opportunity.  Many residents like myself are wishing that they could participate in this program also.

Summary:

Amy Brown comments on how she does not mind waking up at 3:45 AM to milk cows, because it is helping keep her out of debt when she graduates.  Levi Walker works as a town tour guide, and he comments on how great an opportunity attending C of O is.  Jerry Davis, president of the college, talks about the rewards that the students get from the work on campus that the students participate in.

Audience and agenda:

CBS is one of the major networks in America, it delivers a wide range of programming.  The agenda of the Early Show is to keep viewers informed on current events nationally and internationally.  CBS also has its own channel on youtube which has over 100,000 subscribers.

Usefulness:

College of the Ozarks is a institution that exhibits the change that needs to happen to the American higher education system.  Everyone that needs help paying for college is not eligible for a Pell Grant.  So they are forced to take out a student loan from their bank, and go through the process of repayment after graduating.  If we had more free tuition colleges then students would not be graduating college in debt having to pay off student loans.  Getting through college should be a rewarding experience, not one that students should dread.

Don Young thanks Bernice Johnson throughout his speech for her support on HR 4137.

Audience and agenda:

Youtube is a web site where viewers can search for videos on various subjects.  Don Young has his own channel on youtube which contains speeches that he has given to congress.  Young’s channel has been viewed 24,309 times and has 156 subscribers.

Usefulness:

This video gives a reason why Pell grants were made more available in the past.  The fact that kids who have lost family member in the Iraq and Afghanistan are automatically eligible for a grant is not ok.  The reason why is that there are kids that need the grants are not able to, because kids that might still be able to afford college are given money under this law.

NNDB is a website where you can find biographies on notable people throughout history, and connects them to other notable people.

Usefulness:

This gives viewers a sense of the history of Pell grants, and how the grant got its name.  The only thing that this website does not give is more history on Claiborne Pell.  According to wikipedia, pell grants were initially created to educate the incarcerated in order to prevent them from repeating their offenses.

The interview ends with Candy Crowley explaining that President Obama might have to turn to some Republicans for support, in order to pass this stimulus bill.

Audience and agenda:

This video was posted by a user that goes by the name gettingtothetruth2.  There is a collection of  614 news video clips on various current events, from various news organizations. Gettingtothetruth2′s channel has had over 10,000 views, and has 197 subscribers.

Useful:

This video shows three experts giving their view on why pell grants need to be funded in the economic stimulus package.  This is a  good way to keep teachers from losing their jobs at the college level, especially at community colleges.  With more students able to afford and attend colleges, more teachers will be needed to accomodate them.  Increasing pell grant funding will help to create more jobs in the future also, with the increase in college graduates that could be seen.

The web site that you directed to when entering portalpick.com/grants,  is federalgrantsource.org.  The website charges a $4.95 membership fee.  There is no information on how long the website has been around for, or how many subscribers it has.

Usefulness:

Pell grants are funds that do not have to be paid back after you graduate college.  These are one of the grants that you can obtain at this website.  There are a ton of web sites just like federalgrantsource.org  People should just go to the FAFSA web page and fill out the free application for financial aid, and visit your University’s financial aid office to find out if they are eligible for a pell grants.

Photo slideshow reflections

I really think that this photo assignment was my weakest assignment yet.  I am normally a very shy person, especially around new people.  The main thing that went wrong with this assignment is that I did not choose the right  person as my subject.  I chose my neighbor, because we were already good friends and knew each other well.  It turned out when the day came that he did not want me following him to classes all day.  He felt weirded out about someone following him around with a camera.  So I only had 3 different locations that I had shot him in.  There was no time to find someone else because I only had the camera for 24 hours.  When I finished editing the audio, and started working on the slideshow itself I struggled at first.  It was hard matching up the pictures to what Colson was talking about.  In the end I feel like I did the best with what i had to work with.

In the end my story really did not have a focus to it.  The first minute of the presentation is Colson talking about how he learned to play basketball.  Then the next minute is him introducing himself and explaining his day.

Amounts provided to the Education Department (Table)

State tables

Summary:

The first table shows how much money will be given to the Department from the ARRA that was just passed.  A table of how the money will be allocated to each state is given also.  Oregon will be receiving $279,413,147 in funding for pell grants, that is a $81,203,754  increase from 2008.

Audience and agenda

The Department of Education is the governmental body in charge of the United States education system.  This website is intended to bring up to the date news on policy decisions made regarding education.

Usefulness

The State analysis really helped me put into perspective how much money the State of Oregon is going to get to increase pell grant awards. A majority of the funding went states with bigger urban areas such as New York, and California.  Hopefully the students that really need the financial aid get pell grant awards.  The question now is, what will happen to keep funding on track with the rising cost of tutition?

Pell grant increase will help thousands of students

Experts: Pell grant hike will be big

Summary: The newly passed stimulus plan will increase the maximum pell grant award to $5,350 this year, and to $5,500 next year.  Financial aid officers are still in the dark on how much money will be distributed, but the retention rate will increase because more students will be able to afford college.

US department of education

Dan Forster: chief financial aid officer at Simmons College

Joyce McLaughlin: director of financial aid at University of Mass. Lowell

Summary:

The US department of education sends out a grid to every college which shows whether a student is eligible and determines how much a student will recieve.  A representative is quoted saying that new grids, with the changes introduced in the stimulus plan, will be sent out in the coming weeks.  Bernie Pekala is quoted in support of the increase in pell grant funding, calling it a “win win for students and the schools…”.  Dan Forster basically reiterates what the department of education officer said earlier, that estimated awards will be packaged in the coming weeks.  Joyce McLaughlin is quoted supporting the increase in funding at the end of the article.

Audience and agenda:

The Boston Business Journal cover news on the economy of the Boston area.  They have a readership of 2000 citizens, and take no political stance in their writings.

Usefulness:

One thing that this showed is that the pell grant award will increase aven more next year to $5,500.  Another is that the eligibility of students for pell grant aid might change.  If the eligibility requirements change then that will be a failure to fufill on a campaign promise to make college available to everyone.

The American Rcovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is the stimulus package that was just passed.  15.6 billion dollars is being invested towards increasing the maximum pell grant award by 500 dollars.  This will help 7 million students pursue a college education.

Usefulness:
